Description

Bishton Manor is a manor house dating from the 15th century, with later additions and alterations. The house is partly timber framed with plastered infill and pebbledash rendering, with some sections on a sandstone plinth, and has plain tiled roofs. Originally designed with an open hall plan, it includes service and solar wings, which have been extended and converted. The main hall section has three bays, a close-studded service wing to the left of four short bays, and a solar wing to the right of two bays. A timber-framed porch, located in the angle between the hall and solar, features close studding and curved brackets, and may mark the site of a former oriel. A pebbledash rendered, timber-framed, hipped roof extension to the left of the service wing is likely from the 16th or 17th century and features a massive projecting brick end stack with rebuilt paired shafts and an integral red brick stack on the ridge. Casement windows, mostly dating to the 19th century, are present throughout, including a tall rectangular window in the hall, and canted bay windows in the service and solar wings. The rear of the service wing has a jettied first floor at the gable end, with close studding and 20th-century lattice casements; the openings between the studs in the attic space possibly indicate the positions of original windows. A 19th-century addition obscures the back wall of the hall, and a tall, narrow, timber-framed wing was added around 1930 at a right angle to the left. The roof, which has undergone remodelling, is of trussed rafter construction over the hall and shows signs of smoke blackening. A single arch-braced truss is visible in the service wing, and the solar has curved wind braces, cambered tie beams, and collar beams.
