Description

The Old Windmill is an 18th-century tower mill, later converted into a house. It has a sandstone ashlar base with a stepped plinth, a red brick upper section reinforced by iron straps, and a projecting wooden upper storey. The building is three storeys high. Windows and the entrance are 20th-century additions. The interior no longer contains the original machinery, but it retains a datestone inscribed “RW - 1768”. An external datestone is also dated 1768. In the early 20th century, Colonel Thorneycroft of Tettenhall Towers, near Wolverhampton, owned the windmill and constructed the upper storey as a lookout point to view the Shropshire Hills.
