Description

The Shrewsbury Arms is a house that has been converted into an inn, dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with later additions and alterations. It features a half-timbered design set on a sandstone and brick plinth, with 20th-century red brick nogging and plain tiled roofs. The building is of the hall and cross-wing type, with the main surviving feature being the front facing Church Road, which consists of three structural bays.

The first floor has small square panelling, while the ground floor exhibits close studding and short tension braces. There is a continuous moulded jetty on the first floor, supported by four carved brackets. Below, there are two 20th-century projecting bays with leaded casements, and two 20th-century casements on the first floor. A prominent central quadripartite chimney features arched dividing rebates and a moulded capping on a sandstone base.

On the left-hand gable end, the ground floor has close studding and the first floor has square panelling, with the jetty continuing on four carved brackets (three of which are replacements, one featuring linked chain decoration). The attic has a moulded jetty with lozenge-shaped and decorative half-timbering above, along with 20th-century casements. A fragment of the hall is visible from the High Street, which is plastered and has two storeys, featuring a 20th-century casement on the first floor and a projecting extension with an entrance at the front. There is a brick end stack, and sawn-off purlins projecting from the gable end indicate that the range has been truncated.
