Description

The Church of St Laurence is a parish church located in Ludlow, primarily built in the 15th century, with elements from the 13th and 14th centuries. It was restored by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and Sir A Blomfield. The church is constructed of ashlar sandstone and coursed rubble, topped with a lead roof.

The layout includes a nave and aisles, a transept, a chancel, chancel chapels, and a north vestry. Notable features include a 13th-century south doorway, a 14th-century hexagonal south porch, and the north aisle along with the north and south transepts. The 15th-century elements consist of the nave and arcade, which features a clerestory and an elaborate timber roof, as well as the chancel, transepts, and crossing, topped by a crossing tower.

Inside, there are stalls dating from around 1447, which were altered in the 19th century, and include fine misericords. The church also has a rood screen and stained glass, much of which has been restored. It contains monuments to several notable individuals, including Sir Robert Townshend and his wife (1581), Edmund Walter and his wife (1592), Edward Woties (1635), Ambrosia Sydney (1580), Theophilus Salway (1760), Sir John Brydgeman (1637) and his wife, Dame Mary Eure (1612) and her husband (1616). The Church of St Laurence is the largest parish church in Shropshire, measuring 203 feet in length and featuring a tower that rises to 135 feet.
