Description

St Michael's Parishioners' War Memorial is a churchyard war memorial that dates from July 1921. It is made of limestone and features a sculpted Calvary set within a Gothic arch, resting on a rectangular base and plinth.

The monument faces south-east and has a gabled head with projecting moulded coping. Within this gable is a pointed Gothic arch that holds the sculpted Crucifixion. Below the arch, there is a steeply raking chamfer inscribed with the words ‘LEAVING US / AN / EXAMPLE’. At the top of the cross, there is a carved scroll displaying the initials ‘INRI’. The arch bears the inscription ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF THESE / CONNECTED WITH THIS PARISH / WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1919 / FRIENDS AND NEIGHBOURS HAVE CAUSED THIS TO BE ERECTED’.

The base of the memorial has a steeply sloping top, adorned with sculpted representations of a soldier’s helmet and a rifle. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the front and flanks of the base, with the initials ‘RIP’ inscribed at the center at the bottom. The rectangular plinth serves as an apron in front of the monument.
