Description
Skirbeck War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, located in the churchyard of St Nicholas Church, which is a Grade II* listed building. The memorial stands approximately 4 meters tall and is made of limestone. At the top, there is a crucifix beneath a triangular canopy that is carved to resemble a wooden roof. On the southern side, there is a carved figure of the Virgin and child. The hooded Calvary sits atop an octagonal shaft that features broach-stops at its base. The shaft has a square base and is positioned on a square plinth with a bevelled top, which is inscribed with incised lettering. The north face reads "IN MEMORIAM," the east face "RIP," the south face "PRO PATRIA," and the west face displays "1914-1918." Below these inscriptions, the names of 36 men from the parish who died during the First World War are engraved on each face.
