Description
This building, located at 55 St Michael's Street in Shrewsbury, is a house that was formerly the clerk's house for Benyon and Bage's flax mill. It dates from around 1800 and was designed by architect and builder John Simpson. The house is constructed of brick and features a hipped Welsh slate roof. It has two storeys with a basement at the rear and a three-window range. The central entrance consists of a four-panelled door with an overlight, flanked by 12-pane sash windows that have flat-arched brick heads. The upper storey contains nine-pane sash windows. The house has side wall and axial stacks. It is built of "great bricks," which connect it closely to the flax mill complex, where these bricks were used in all construction prior to 1805.
