Description

Farm buildings located approximately 40 metres to the west of The Moat Farmhouse date from around 1840. They are constructed from coursed limestone rubble and weatherboarded timber frame, topped with slate roofs. The buildings are arranged in a U-shape around a courtyard that is open to the southwest. The northeast range includes a central watermill, flanked by a barn and a cartshed with a granary above, and features a catslide roof over lean-to open-fronted shelter sheds on the southeast side. The southeast range contains stables and a hayloft, while the former southwest range had a cow house, which is now mostly demolished.

On the northeast front, there is a central projecting first-floor weatherboarded hoist loft with steps leading up from the right, and a large cast iron undershot waterwheel beneath it. To the left, there is a 4-bay cartshed with a weatherboarded granary above, and to the right, a 5-bay open-fronted barn with a large lunette in the gable end to the left. The southeast range features two boarded loft doors on the northwest front, along with nine segmental-headed doors and windows, some of which are blocked with 20th-century concrete blocks. There is also a large late 20th-century door in the right-hand gable end and a 20th-century lean-to addition to the southeast. Most of the courtyard is now occupied by large late 20th-century farm buildings. Despite alterations and partial demolition, these farm buildings and the associated farmhouse represent an interesting example of an early 19th-century planned farmstead that incorporates water power.
