Description
No. 53 Mardol is a house and outbuildings that have been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 18th century and is constructed of painted brick with an exposed timber truss in the gable end, topped by a plain tiled roof. The building stands three storeys high with attic dormers. It features a four-window range, which includes a modern shop front inserted at the ground level, and above this are unevenly spaced flush-framed 12-pane sash windows with segmentally-arched heads. The gabled attic dormers add to its character. To the right, there is a coped gable and an axial stack. The rear elevation shows some exposed timbering of thin scantling, and there is a rear wing that is two and a half storeys tall, featuring a loading door on the first floor and an additional dormer. There is also a further ancillary building at right angles, made of painted brick with a plain tiled roof and inserted windows. No. 53A was listed on September 19, 1972.
