Description
The buildings to the rear of 53 Mardol in Shrewsbury are outbuildings that were formerly used as a warehouse and workshops, and may also have included a domestic building. They were constructed in several phases, with the earliest likely dating back to the 16th century, while the rest were built in the early 19th century.
The oldest section, which runs parallel to the street, is timber-framed and brick, topped with a plain tiled roof. There is a warehouse range that connects this section to the street, built in early 19th-century brick with a plain tiled roof. The earliest block features an archway over a passage, with timber-framed construction above that has square panelling. To the right of the passage, there is a two-window range that may have a timber-framed core, although it has been faced in brick, likely during the 18th century, and repaired in the 19th century. The warehouse range is two-and-a-half storeys high with three windows, though the central window is blocked. It has outer doorways and a loading door to the right, as well as a further loading door with a hoist in the gabled dormer above.
