Description

The retaining wall and flights of steps were built between 1829 and 1830. Constructed from coursed rubble stone and brick, the wall is approximately 1.5 meters high and extends southwards from outside No. 72 to outside No. 34. It features flights of flag-topped steps leading up to the highway at various intervals. This structure was part of the gradient improvement works recommended by Thomas Telford in 1829.
