Description
No. 16 Lower Broad Street is a house that was formerly an inn, dating from the 17th century with alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries. The building features a stucco finish over brick, with probable timber framing and rubble at the rear. It has a Welsh slate roof and brick stacks at the back. The house is three stories tall with a cellar and has a two-window range with two-light metal casements. The central entrance has a part-glazed door set within a wooden doorcase, flanked by small bay windows with arched-head lights. The front of the building was raised in the mid-19th century but retains the original roof pitch at the rear. The rear includes wings of two and three stories, partly covered with a plain tile roof. The three-story wing has sections that are pebble dashed and coursed rubble, with an end stack. There is a tall rear lateral stack on the right. The interior is reputed to retain part of the timber-frame and a winder stair.
