Description
These are two houses located on Lower Broad Street, Ludlow. They likely date from the 17th century, with alterations in the 18th century. The front of the buildings is stuccoed, with some timber-frame construction visible. They have a plain tile roof.
The two-storey and attic houses have a two-window front. They contain 18th-century 3/6 sash windows in broad cases. A 20th-century gable dormer is present, featuring a horizontal casement window. The entrance to the left-hand house (No. 70) is through a 19th-century four-panel door. The entrance to the right-hand house (No. 71) is through an 18th-century six-panel door with a plain casement overlight featuring old glass. To the right of the front door is a canted bay with a moulded cornice, glazing shafts, and sill. A bressummer with a moulded cornice is supported by boarded consoles across the front of the building. A passage leads to No. 70, where timber-framing is visible.
The right-hand return side of the building displays early 17th-century box framing, with a 2/2 sash window and fixed light above a rubble ground floor. This ground floor features a horizontal casement within a heavy oak frame. A further range of rubble and brick construction incorporates a plain tile roof and a brick stack. No. 70 was originally listed on 28th October 1969.
