Description
The stable block, built around 1770, is located approximately 20 metres to the north-east of The Grove in Market Drayton. It is constructed of red brick and features a hipped plain tile roof. The building has a U-shaped plan that is oriented at right angles to the road and consists of two storeys. Notable architectural details include a dentil brick eaves cornice and a central square wooden cupola topped with a keyed round arch and an ogee lead dome, which is adorned with a globe finial and weathervane. The façade is arranged in a 2:4:2 bay configuration, with a central break that features a wide open triangular-pedimented gable, housing a circular wooden clock in the tympanum. The windows are wooden cross types with gauged-brick heads, although those on the first floor are blocked. The two central bays contain blocked first-floor lunettes above ground-floor round-arched doorways; the left doorway is blocked, while the right doorway has a pair of boarded doors. There is also a boarded door in the second bay from the left, which has a two-part rectangular overlight. Flanking wings extend at right angles, with the left wing being a single storey featuring a brick ridge stack and altered openings, while the right wing is two storeys tall with various boarded doors and lozenge-shaped honeycomb vents in the gable end. The rear of the building has eight bays and includes a segmental-headed pair of boarded doors located just off-centre to the left. The end walls of the main block consist of two bays. The interior has not been inspected.
