Description
Shropshire Gate Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid-17th century, with alterations from the late 18th century and an addition from the mid to late 19th century. The building features a pebbledashed timber frame, with some parts rebuilt in red brick, and has a slate roof. The layout follows a baffle-entry plan with two framed bays, and the 19th-century addition is located to the west. The farmhouse is one storey and attic, as well as two storeys.
On the south front, there are three windows, which include late 19th and 20th-century two- and three-light wooden casements. A boarded door is positioned off-centre to the left between the first and second windows. To the right, there is a one-storey lean-to brick addition. The rear of the building features a pair of gabled eaves dormers on the right with 20th-century two-light wooden casements, and a first-floor two-light wooden casement to the left. The ground floor has a 19th-century two-light wooden casement to the left and a 20th-century two-light wooden casement to the right, along with a central boarded door and a large late 19th-century open lean-to porch. The 19th-century addition includes a string course, three brick stacks, and a window arrangement of two-:three-:two on the west side with a gabled break.
Inside the 17th-century section, there is a large central stack that is truncated below the ridge and has a blocked fireplace. An oak winder stair from the 17th century is located behind the stack, along with an old boarded door beneath the stairs featuring wrought-iron strap hinges. The substantial framing is visible, including large jowl posts.
