Description

Broughton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1600 and the mid-17th century, which was remodeled in the mid-19th century. It features a pebbledashed timber frame with brick nogging, and is underbuilt in painted brick with a flush dressed red sandstone plinth and quoins, extending in painted brick. The roof is slate and has two spans to the left. The framing consists of concealed square panels with long straight tension braces. The building is L-shaped, comprising two framed bays plus one bay with later infill in the angle. It has two storeys and a gable-lit attic over a basement, with sprocketed eaves and external brick end stacks.

The façade has three bays with 19th-century three-light wooden casements. The central entrance features a four-panelled half-glazed door with a moulded architrave, a four-part rectangular overlight, and a late 19th-century gabled timber porch with baluster sides and pierced shaped barge boards topped with a finial. There is probably an 18th-century service wing at the rear, constructed of painted brick with a square-panelled timber framed first floor, and it has one storey and a gable-lit attic, along with an integral brick end stack.

Inside, the farmhouse has chamfered beams with plain and ogee stops, and a large open fireplace in the right-hand ground-floor room with a large chamfered lintel. There is a 17th-century dog-leg staircase with winders and a 19th-century balustrade, except for a 17th-century newel post in the attic with a finial. The first floor features an early 18th-century panelled door and old boarded attic doors. The roof structure includes large purlins and collar and tie-beam end trusses, with the truss in the rear wing altered to allow for walk-through access.
