Description
Alderton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 19th century, which incorporates an 18th-century core. It is built of red brick on a dressed red sandstone plinth and features a two-span slate roof that is hipped to the east. The building has a double-range plan and stands two storeys tall.
The south front has three bays and is adorned with glazing bar sashes, with 12 panes on the ground floor and 20 panes on the first floor. The central entrance features a 20th-century six-panelled door with a three-part overlight, framed by a doorcase that includes panelled pilaster strips, a moulded cornice, and brackets supporting a narrow lead-covered hood. The right-hand return front has two windows, although the left-hand windows are blocked or blind. At the rear, there is a one-storey lean-to.
While the interior was not inspected, an early 19th-century fireplace was noted in the left-hand ground-floor room, which includes fluted pilasters, a fluted frieze, and corner paterae. The building appears to have a core from the 18th century in the north-west, which was extended to the south and east in the early 19th century, as indicated by the straight joints to the north and west and the 18th-century glazing bar sash on the west side.
