Description

Crows Cottage is an early 18th-century house located on the north side of High Street in Clive, Shropshire. It is constructed from dressed grey Grinshill sandstone and features a slate roof. The building has a T-plan layout and consists of one storey and an attic. Notable architectural elements include a chamfered plinth (rendered at the front), a plat band, a moulded stone eaves cornice, and parapeted gable ends with chamfered copings and moulded kneelers.

The cottage has a pair of gabled semi-dormers with 2-light casements and large external stone end stacks. The left stack has a moulded cornice and a rendered brick addition, while the right stack has been partly rebuilt in 20th-century concrete block. There is also an integral stone end stack on the rear wing. The front facade features two windows, which are mid- to late 19th-century wooden cross windows with stepped triple keystones, and a central 4-panelled door with a triple keystone and a gabled timber porch.

Inside, the right-hand ground-floor room has a chamfered beam and joists, along with a large open fireplace that has a chamfered cambered wooden lintel. An early 18th-century oak staircase features winders at the top, an open string, two turned balusters per tread, a moulded handrail, and square-section newel posts, the top one adorned with a finial. The rear wing contains a large open kitchen fireplace. The front door is fitted with 18th-century strap hinges, and there is a wooden screen between the right-hand ground-floor room and the staircase, which includes doors with 18th-century strap hinges and H-hinges. The first-floor doors have three raised and fielded panels.
