Description
The monumental obelisk dedicated to Field Marshal Viscount Combermere was erected in 1890 and is located in Combermere Park, Marbury cum Quoisley. It is constructed from Keuper and bunter sandstones. The obelisk stands on a deep square plinth with banded rustication, which supports two chamfered steps leading to the base of the monument. The base features clasping buttresses at the corners and a cyma-moulded cornice above.
Above this, a further chamfered step supports the colossal obelisk, which has aedicular window surrounds with rudimentary classical detailing located approximately halfway up each side, set upon a cyma-moulded string course. Each side of the base has a panel of red bunter sandstone; the south side contains a doorway, while the north side bears a memorial inscription. This inscription includes the coat of arms of the Cottons on the left and the words "IN MEMORY OF FIELD MARSHAL VISCOUNT COMBERMERE G:G:B. K:S:I. K:T:S. G:G:H. P:G BORN 1773 DIED 1865." on the right. The monument was erected by the direction of his widow, Mary Viscountess Combermere, who died in 1889. The design of this obelisk is similar to that created by Sir Robert Smirke for the Duke of Wellington, which was erected in Phoenix Park, Dublin between 1817 and 1822.
