Description
The Old Farmhouse at Marbury Hall is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with significant additions and alterations made in the 19th century. It features a timber frame with brick infill, constructed in red Flemish bond brick, topped with a plain tile roof. The building stands two storeys tall.
On the entrance front, which was originally timber framed but largely re-faced in the 19th century, there is a projecting gabled bay located to the left of the centre. This bay has a basket-arched opening at ground floor level that is now partially blocked and contains a 3-light casement window. Above this, on the first floor, there is another basket-arched opening. The left flank of the wing shows 3 x 4 cells of timber framing. Adjacent to this wing is a recessed bay featuring a doorway on the right set in timber framed walling, which includes a 17th-century plank door with one surviving strap hinge and a 19th-century lean-to porch in front. To the left, there is a 19th-century cambered leaded window with three casement lights. Above this window is a timbered 17th-century gabled dormer window, now fitted with a 19th-century 3-light cambered-headed casement window. The first floor also has two 3-light gabled dormer windows with 17th-century timber surrounds. The roofing over the right portion of the building is made of slate, and there are ridge chimney stacks positioned at the right and left of centre.
At the rear, there is a projecting gabled wing on the right side, which features a 2-light and a 3-light 19th-century casement window. On the first floor, there is a basket-arched window surround that is now partially blocked, alongside a 2-light 19th-century casement window to the right. To the left of this area is a recessed portion with a ground floor doorway, and above it, there is a 17th-century timber-framed 3-light gabled dormer window. Adjacent to the projecting gabled wing is another recessed area that includes two 19th-century ground-floor doorways and a first-floor dormer window of 17th-century origin with a timber surround, along with a blocked window opening.
