Description
The lychgate in the churchyard of St. Michael is a war memorial built around 1919. It is constructed from yellow sandstone ashlar with a timber upper body and a stone slate roof. The side walls are made of ashlar and feature ramped walls that culminate in piers topped with octagonal caps and moulded tops. The timber upper body includes cambered tie beams at the gable ends on both the front and rear, supported by angle braces. The left brace is inscribed with "1914" and the right with "1919". The tie beam bears the inscription: "To : the : glory : of : GOD : and : in : honoured : memory : of : those : of : this : parish : who : gave : / Their : lives : for : their : country : and whose : names : are : recorded : on : the : tablet : in : the : church". Above this tie beam is a king post, with arched braces and moulded bargeboards and bargepost. The rear of the lychgate has the inscription: "Ye who live in mid English pastures green, Remember us and think what might have been."
