Description

The Butcher's Arms Public House is an inn that has been converted into a shop and public house. It dates from the mid- to late 16th century and has undergone significant later additions and alterations. The building features a timber frame that is rendered at the front, with a cross-wing that has been rebuilt in brick and has a planted timber frame in the gable. The roof is slate, with machine tiles on the cross-wing.

The structure is L-shaped, with a hall range that faces the street and consists of two and a half framed bays, while the gabled cross-wing on the left has been entirely rebuilt and extended to the rear. The building has two storeys. The framing is exposed on the rear first-floor wall of the hall range, showcasing square panels with short straight tension braces and painted brick infill.

There is a passageway between No. 38 and the Butcher's Arms that features a richly moulded beam with run-out stops. The hall range has one glazing bar sash window above a late 20th-century shop front, and a late 20th-century casement window over the passage. Additionally, there is a late 20th-century three-light latticed fixed-light window on the ground floor of the gable, with a contemporary casement window above it. A long low rendered range at the rear of No. 38 is noted but is not of special architectural interest.
