Description
No. 16 Bull Ring is a house that has been converted into a shop and offices. It dates from the late 18th century, with a core that likely originates from the 17th century. The building is constructed of brick, featuring asbestos tiles on the front and Welsh slate on the rear. It stands three stories high and has a three-window range, with early 19th-century plain sashes set in moulded cases beneath gauged brick flat arches. There is a storey band and two 1/1 sashes in moulded cases, along with a brick modillion eaves.
The central entrance is located in a protruding 19th-century shopfront that has a curved return to the right. To the right of the shopfront, there is a double door leading to a passage at the rear, which is topped by a brick arch and features a storey band of narrow brick above it. The passage includes a cellar opening and has stuccoed walls, as well as a 19th-century half-glazed door with a moulded architrave.
At the rear, there is a two-story wing that has a 19th-century brick stack on the rear gable, with the visible portion weather boarded. The right side of this wing has a projecting first floor supported by an exposed bressummer and is roughcast, featuring two 19th-century casements. The stuccoed ground floor has two late 19th-century plain sashes.
Additionally, there is a further workshop range, which likely dates from the 17th century and has undergone many alterations. This range is made of rubble with some brick quoins and patching, and includes various early 19th-century lights and sliding sashes. Inside, the building features chamfered beams, some splayed window openings, and a stone arched opening leading to the stairs that ascend to the higher level range. There is also the base of a massive gable stack with a blocked fireplace.
