Description
The dovecote, built in the early 18th century, is located approximately 8 meters to the south-west of Whitton Hall. It is constructed of red brick and features a conical graded slate roof with a circular plan. Notable architectural details include a chamfered plinth, a toothed-brick band about halfway up, and a dentil brick eaves cornice. There are round-arched dormers on the north-west and south-east sides, along with a central circular glover that has turned wooden balusters and a conical slate cap topped with a wooden finial. A segmental-headed opening is positioned high on the south-west side, while a segmental-headed boarded door is found on the north-east side. Inside, the dovecote contains approximately 520 L-shaped nest holes with ledges and a central rotating potence with three projecting arms for ladders at different heights, all set on a cobbled floor. This dovecote is part of a notable group of buildings associated with Whitton Hall.
