Description

The Barracks and The Barracks Cottage comprise two houses, originally four cottages, located in Richards Castle. A core of the building dates back to the 16th century, with 18th and 19th century extensions and a substantial restoration in 1993. The construction is timber-frame with painted cement-rendered infill panels, set upon painted brick and stone rubble plinths. There's also a painted cement-rendered extension wall, all topped with plain-tile roofs.

The building presents as a five-bay north-south alignment, with a south-facing cross wing and a side extension to the east. Three 19th-century brick ridge stacks are visible, each with dentil capping. The east-facing main range façade has a heavily restored rectangular panelled timber frame, three panels high above a first-floor girding beam and two panels high below. It features a 20th-century casement window to the left, a 19th-century casement to the right, and a restored ground-floor casement with metal lattice lights. A 20th-century tiled lean-to porch shelters the main entrance. The north gable end has a restored single 3-light casement with metal lattice glazing on both ground and first floors, and a 2-light casement to the attic. The end truss framing displays square framing, a straight tie beam, three struts under the collar, and framing for the attic window. The west-facing wall has four bays of square framing, four panels high, with restored casements of 3-lights with metal lattice glazing. A single-light casement is present on the first floor left-hand side. The east extension wing exhibits a mix of restored timber framing to the west bay and a rendered brick finish to the east bay, both with restored casement windows and metal lattice glazing.

The Barracks Cottage, a south-facing cross wing, displays a late 19th-century appearance with imitation square framing. It incorporates three-light casements with metal lattice glazing in each gable, with two at ground level flanking a central projecting porch. Two gabled dormers break the eaves.

Inside, bridging beams feature ogee chamfer stops. Swept braces are present on the ground and first floor within the north bay. A plain chamfered 17th-century framed doorway is located in the east wall frame.
