Description
Plowden Mill is a watermill dating from the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed from uncoursed limestone rubble, featuring windows with red brick dressings and dressed stone sills, topped with a slate roof. The building has three storeys and a gable-lit attic, with segmental-headed small-paned cast iron windows.
On the north front, there is a boarded loft door on the first floor to the left, and a boarded door on the ground floor also to the left, along with a one-storey lean-to on the right that has a corrugated iron roof and a two-leaf boarded door on the left-hand return front. The west front includes one window on both the first and second floors, as well as a small circular window in the gable end. The south front features two first floor windows and a gabled red brick wheelhouse with a corrugated iron roof, located off-centre to the left. To the east, there is an adjoining one-storey workshop made of red brick with a slate roof, which has a large 20th-century door at the front.
Inside, the ground floor has a boarded partition to the west that encloses the gearing and shafting for two sets of millstones located on the first floor. The second floor contains grain bins with a wooden chute to supply the stones. The wheelhouse to the south likely houses an overshot wheel, which has wooden spokes and a cast iron hub and rim. Plowden Mill is included as an example of an estate water mill that is still in working order.
