Description
Hillend is a cottage dating from the 17th century, which was altered and extended in the mid-19th century. It features a timber frame with red brick and plastered infill set on a stone plinth, topped with a stone slate roof that has been repaired with Welsh slates at the rear. The cottage has stone end stacks, with the right stack projecting and the left stack being of double thickness. It is 1½ storeys high and consists of two framed bays, with three square panels at the eaves. The ground floor has four 19th-century casement windows, and there are two 19th-century gabled dormers with bargeboards and finials in the roof slope, with a roughly central entrance. Both gable ends are clad in stone, with the left end being notably thick to accommodate a second fireplace added when a single-storey extension was constructed on the left in the mid-19th century. There is also an outshut to the rear on the right. Inside, the timber frame is largely intact, and the roof structure is of the Queen strut type, featuring V-struts to the collar.
