Description
Gateway Lodge, gates, and associated railings are located at the south entrance to Brogyntyn Park. Designed by Benjamin Gummow in 1815, the structure features sandstone ashlar and ashlar-faced red brick. The main feature is a large round-headed Triumphal archway, which is flanked by lower square projections that once served as accommodation for the lodge-keeper. These are surrounded by wrought-iron railings on low quadrant walls, leading to subsidiary entrances on either side, all in the Greek Revival style.
The gateway has a moulded round arch with a scrolled keystone and a moulded entablature topped with a dentilled cornice. There are additional moulded cornices at the impost level, supported by two Ionic columns. The flanking projections also feature moulded cornices and string courses, with round-arched recesses at the front and rear that were originally fitted with sash windows but are now infilled. Access to these projections is through six-panel doors located in round-arched side recesses beneath the archway.
The ornamental wrought-iron gates at the center have two tiers of spear-shaped finials and standards capped with urns, a motif that is also reflected in the railings on either side, although the left side is now missing. The subsidiary entrances on both sides have plain moulded entablatures and wrought-iron gates. The area beneath the main archway is paved and includes spur stones.
Brogyntyn Hall is not included in this listing.
