Description
The lodges, gateway, and railings to the south of Chippenham Park are a matching pair of Neo-Classical structures built around 1745 for Lord Sandys. They are constructed from ashlar limestone and feature low-pitched slate roofs with central red brick stacks. The lodges are two storeys high, with main entrances facing the carriageway and triangular pedimented gables facing the road. There is a band between the floors, and the first floor has three casement windows with glazing bars set in segmental arches. The central round-headed hung sash window, also with glazing bars shaped to an arch, is flanked by two matching doors, each adorned with a projecting cornice and a Greek fret designed frieze.
A low wall with iron railings connects the lodges to the main entrance gateway, which features a large round-headed archway flanked by two smaller arches with railings. Above the arches are two recessed panels decorated with swags and a panel below, topped by a deep classical cornice with the frieze inscription 'In spe spire'. A sculpture of Hope, crafted in Coade stone and added by John Tharp around 1800, is positioned above the gateway.
