Description
The lodges and entrance gates to the north-west of Chippenham Park are a matching pair of Neo-Classical structures built around 1794-1798 by architect James Wyatt for John Tharp, who acquired the park in 1791. Constructed from gault brick with limestone dressings and topped with slate roofs, these one-storey lodges feature entrances that face the carriageway. The north-west facades have pedimented gables with double recessed round arched blind windows and panelled brick quoins. Each lodge is flanked by two round-headed arched hung sash windows with glazing bars, beside a central doorway that has a round arch. The recessed door consists of six flush panels and is topped with a round-headed fanlight, also with glazing bars. Each lodge has gate piers and half-piers, which are topped with two Coade Stone Etruscan urns on stone caps. The original gates and railings remain intact.
