Terrace Retaining Wall And Tower Approximatey 10 Metres To North-East And 60 Metres To North-West Of Rowton Castle

The terrace retaining wall and tower, located approximately 10 metres to the north-east and 60 metres to the north-west of Rowton Castle, date from the early 19th century and are possibly designed by George Wyatt. The structure is built from roughly coursed Alberbury breccia rubble with red sandstone coping. It has an irregular U-shape, with the north-east wall measuring about 80 metres in length and 3 metres in height, while the north-west and south-west walls are approximately 35 and 30 metres long, respectively, both standing about 1 metre high.

The north-west wall features a high battered base, a projecting string course, and a parapet with chamfered coping. The terrace extends to the north-east of the castle and includes buttresses at the corners and bastions with battlemented parapets. A flight of stone steps leads to the south-east. At the north-west end, there is a projecting square tower that has a plinth, cornice, and a battlemented parapet with chamfered coping; it consists of two storeys and has a rectangular opening on the first floor facing north-east, along with an entrance on the south-east side. The north-west and south-west walls are earth banked above and feature a low ha-ha. This wall and tower are likely part of the early 19th-century developments at Rowton Castle, which were carried out between 1809 and 1812 by George Wyatt, with further work completed between 1824 and 1828.
