ALBERBURY WITH CARDESTON C.P. ROWTON Terrace retaining wall and tower approx.10 metres to north-east and 60 metres to north-west of Rowton Castle

GV II

Terrace retaining wall and tower. Early C19, possibly by George Wyatt. Roughly coursed Alberbury breccia rubble with red sandstone coping. Irregular U-plan; north-east wall approximately 80 metres long and 3 metres high, north-west and south-west walls approximately 35 and 30 metres long respectively, both approximately one metre high. North-west wall: high battered base, projecting string course, and parapet with chamfered coping. Terrace projecting to north-east of castle with buttresses at angles and bastions with battlemented parapets. Flight of stone steps to south-east. Projecting square tower at north-west end with plinth, cornice, and battlemented parapet with chamfered coping; 2 storeys; rectangular first-floor opening to north-east and entrance to south-east. North-west and south-west walls with earth banked above and low ha-ha. The wall and tower are probably part of the early C19 work at Rowton Castle (qv) carried out in 1809-12 by George Wyatt and in 1824-28.
