Description

The Clun War Memorial is a churchyard cross that was unveiled in June 1921. It is made of Cornish granite and is located in a churchyard that is elevated above the road. The memorial features plaques set into the churchyard wall, flanked by buttresses, with the cross, base, and plinth positioned immediately above and behind these plaques.

On the north side, facing the road, there are granite plaques placed between local stone buttresses, which have granite offsets at their tops. The rectangular plaques are framed with moulded edges and have recessed panels with lead lettering. The main inscription reads: "TO THE MEN OF CLUN / WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY / 1914 - 1919." Below this, a separate, lower plaque commemorates the fallen from the Second World War with the inscription: "1939 - 1945." Additionally, there is a small granite plaque inscribed: "1972 / N. IRELAND," which includes a single name.

The platform of the churchyard cross connects with the tops of the buttresses and features two steps leading up to the plinth, which has a semi-circular concave indent on each side. Above the plinth is a square base with a moulded top that supports an octagonal shaft, which gently tapers. The cross itself has a circular boss at the center, displaying a shield on the road-facing side, topped with a crown finial.
