Description
The Beeston memorial, located approximately 23 metres southeast of the tower of the Church of Saint Mary in Market Drayton, is a pedestal tomb with a canopy, dated 1846. It is constructed from grey sandstone ashlar. The memorial features a square base with a step, a pedestal that includes a moulded plinth, recessed side panels, pilaster strips adorned with vertical incised ornament, moulded corners, a moulded cornice, and an amphora finial that has been reset in a 20th-century cement base. The finial has gadrooned lower parts and a Greek key ornament on the band at the top.
The canopy is supported by four fluted columns with acanthus capitals, which hold up an entablature featuring triangular pediments on each face and antefixae at the corners. The pedestal is inscribed with a tribute to William Beeston, detailing his life as a surgeon in Wellington, his age at death, and the dedication from his niece, Tabitha Beeston, who raised the monument in his memory.
