Description
This building is a barn located approximately 20 meters east of Number 2 in Broome, Hopesay. It dates from the mid-17th century, with the eaves raised in the 19th century and some later alterations. The barn has a timber frame clad in corrugated iron, topped with a corrugated iron roof. Originally a four-bay threshing barn, it had its eaves raised, and the left bay was converted into a vehicle entrance during the 19th century. The structure features three wide rectangular openings with hatches and a wide vehicle entrance in the left bay.
Inside, the framing is visible, consisting of square panels with three extending from the cill to the original wall plate, and a rectangular panel above due to the raising of the eaves. Long straight tension braces are present at the bay divisions. There are lateral stone steps on the left wall of the vehicle entrance. The roof comprises a mix of collar and tie-beam trusses, with v-struts from the collars and raking struts from the tie beams to the principal rafters. The barn is included for its group value.
