Description

Court Cottages is a pair of attached houses dating from the 17th century, with 19th-century rear extensions. They feature a painted timber frame with painted render infill panels set on a stone rubble plinth. The rear wings are constructed of buff and red brick, topped with an old plain-tile roof and projecting brick gable-end stacks. The front has a two-window range, with twin gabled brick extensions at the back, where No.1 occupies the left half and No.2 the right half.

The exterior is two storeys high with an attic. The west front displays square framing that is five panels high, with tension braces positioned to the right at sill level and to the left at girding-beam level, along with truss posts, studs, and middle rails. Each house has two three-light casements on both floors, although the ground-floor right window has been replaced with a 20th-century version. To the left side of each house, there is a plain doorway with a projecting tiled canopy; No.2 has a plain boarded door, while No.1 features a 20th-century flush door.

On the right return gable, the square framing is four panels high, with the centre covered by a 20th-century brick projecting stack. The gable-end truss includes a tie beam, collar, and vertical struts. There are casements in the attic and first floor, and a single-purlin roof is evident. The side wall of the rear extension on the right has two-light casements with brick segmental-arch lintels on each floor.

The left return gable also has square framing, partly obscured by a projecting brick stack, with a gable-end truss featuring a straight tie beam, vertical struts to the collar, girding beam, and studs with middle rails. The rear extension side wall on the left mirrors that of the right side. At the rear, there are twin gables, each with two-light casements on both floors and rear doorways featuring 20th-century doors, all topped with segmental-arch lintels. The interior has not been inspected.
