Description

This is a late 16th-century farmhouse, with later 17th and 19th-century additions and alterations. It is located in Boraston. The original structure is timber-framed with painted rendered and brick infill panels on a stone rubble plinth, featuring a brick cross wing. The roofs are covered in plain tiles, and the building has large projecting eaves stacks with spurred brick shafts and 19th-century caps. The original plan was L-shaped, composed of a two-bay main range and a brick cross wing.

The exterior of the east front displays square timber panelling, three panels high, at both the first and ground floors. The first floor is jettied with double-cyma and ovolo moulded bressumers supported by carved console brackets. The north return gable echoes this framing, with added tension bracing at ground level. Casements are mostly 19th century, with top-lights. The west side of the main range showcases framing similar to the east front and a pair of large projecting 16th-century brick stacks that flank the brick cross wing. A projecting tiled gabled extension covers the cross wing gable and the right-hand stack. A 17th-century timber-framed bay with square framing extends to the south, with the gable-end truss visible behind a 19th-century brick lean-to.

Inside, the interior features ovolo-chamfered bridging and cross-bridging beams, and chamfered floor joists with stepped concave chamfer stops. A painted timber crest, carved with a rampant lion, is inset in a ground floor wall. The farmhouse was once part of a larger manor house, which was partially destroyed by fire in the 19th century.
