Description

The former Jerningham Arms Hotel, located on Park Street in Shifnal, dates to approximately 1705, with a re-facing and addition dating to around 1800. A plaque above the second first-floor window from the right bears the date "PAR 1705." The building is stuccoed to imitate ashlar and has an old tile roof. It is three storeys high on the right side and two storeys high on the left. Architectural features include a plinth, a moulded eaves cornice, a moulded gutter, parapeted gable ends, an end stack to the left, an end stack to the right behind the ridge, and a stack in front of the ridge off-centre to the left. The facade has glazing-bar sashes with raised keystones, and three ground-floor flat-topped canted bays. A half-glazed door is located in the second bay from the right, set within a doorcase consisting of a moulded architrave with half-Tuscan pilasters supporting fluted brackets and a flat hood. A large vehicular entrance with a pair of 19th-century wrought-iron gates is positioned to the left of the building. A 19th-century wrought-iron inn sign projects from the first floor between the second and third bays from the left. Two gabled wings extend to the rear of the building. Group value is evident in its contribution to the streetscape.
