Description

Nos. 19 and 21 on Great Hales Street are mid-17th century houses featuring a timber frame with painted brick nogging set on a dressed sandstone plinth. The roof is covered with machine tiles. The framing consists of small square panels, with four panels extending from the sole plate to the wall plate, and short straight corner braces. The houses have an end baffle-entry plan with two framed bays and rise two storeys above a basement.

The front has three windows, which include 20th-century two- and three-light diamond-leaded wooden casements, with two pairs of oriels on the left supported by brackets. To the right, there is a hipped-roofed canted bay with small-paned windows. A small basement window is located off-centre to the left. The ground floor features a 19th-century four-panelled door, which has a lower raised and fielded section and an upper glazed section with 20th-century diamond leading, positioned between the first and second windows from the right. There are four steps leading up to a 20th-century gabled wooden porch, and three steps up to a boarded door on the far left. The left-hand gable end displays an exposed collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts. The interior has not been inspected.
