Description

Bridge House is a 17th-century house located in Grundisburgh, featuring a timber frame with brick and colourwashed rendered infill, topped with a plain tiled roof that was originally thatched. The building has two storeys and an attic, arranged in a three-cell baffle-entry plan.

On the road front, there is a single-storey canted porch to the right, which has a door made up of six raised and fielded panels. To the left, there is another six-panel door framed with a 20th-century classical surround. The ground floor and first floor both have three 3-light casements. The front wall displays applied planking that simulates timber framing. An axial stack with three flues is positioned left of centre.

At the rear, the house is rendered and colour-washed, again featuring simulated timber framing with planking. There is a projecting single-storey gabled wing on the right. The left range includes a set of French windows left of centre, a 20th-century three-light casement at the far left, and a cross-window with a cambered head at the far right. The first floor has three 3-light 19th-century casements and a 3-light raking dormer in the attic.

Inside, the ground floor showcases close studded walling with some visible brick infill. Jowled wall posts support chamfered ceiling beams that feature stepped run-out stops. A winder staircase leads from the lobby to the first floor, with a similar staircase ascending to the attic. The first floor also has jowled wall posts and chamfered ceiling beams. The roof consists of six bays with dog-leg wind braces and cambered collars.
