Description

The Village Butcher and Butcher's House is a mid-19th century house and shop located on The Green in Grundisburgh. It is constructed of yellow Flemish bond brick and features a slate roof. The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical entrance front with three bays. A projecting plinth runs along the base, which is interrupted at the corners by pilaster buttresses that rise to the central bay, which is slightly more prominent.

The central doorway is framed by a classical surround with fluted columns on either side, supporting a ledge above that features a cambered fanlight. The door itself has three raised and fielded panels with moulded surrounds. Flanking the door are ground floor windows, each consisting of three by four sash panes with flat-arched heads. Above these, the first floor windows also have three by four sash panes, and there is a band of three bricks in depth that surrounds their sills.

The roof is hipped and covered with slate, featuring a cross-axial stack on the ridge to the right with two flues, and an axial stack located behind the ridge on the left. The right gable wall is blank, and there is an outshut at the rear of the ground floor. To the left side of the building, there is a single-storey shop addition that slightly projects forward. This addition includes a shop window on the right and a half-glazed door on the left, which has a rectangular overdoor light with diamond-pattern glazing bars. Above these features is a panel with a moulded surround displaying the name of the shop, topped by a battlemented parapet.
