Description

The Church of St Julian is a parish church that has been converted into a craft centre. The tower is the only part that remains from the medieval foundation, dating from the 12th century in the lower stage and from the 15th century above. The main body of the church was built between 1749 and 1750 by Thomas Farnolls Pritchard, with embellishments added to the south wall in 1846. The lower tower is constructed of coursed and squared red sandstone, while the upper part is made of white sandstone. The nave is built of brick with a stone plinth and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof. A lean-to Tuscan porch has been added against the north and south walls of the tower, which features a three-light Perpendicular window in its upper stage, along with a quatrefoil frieze, gargoyles, a parapet, and pinnacles. The stone plinth of the nave has square windows set in incised architraves, and the upper section is divided into bays by paired and single pilasters, with each bay containing a round-arched window supported by triglyph brackets. The nave has a triglyph frieze, a parapet with balustrading and finials, and a shallow squared chancel with a Palladian window. Inside, the nave consists of five bays with a Tuscan arcade and a similar chancel arch. The east window features stained glass by David Evans from 1861.
