Description
No. 1 High Street is a commercial building dating from the early 19th century, with a rear wing that originates from an earlier 16th-century structure. The main facade is finished in stucco over brick, topped by a roof that is not visible behind a parapet. The building stands three storeys high and features a five-window range, along with an additional three windows on the Fish Street elevation. The shop front has been inserted in a traditional style, complete with a continuous fascia supported by paired brackets. The upper windows are 12-pane sashes, and there is a blind window space above the doorway, as well as a tripartite sash window at the curved corner with Fish Street. A plain cornice runs along the parapet eaves, and there are two dormers in the roof facing Fish Street.
The lower rear wing is rendered, with a renewed ground floor that includes a central door and boarded openings for storage. The upper storey jetties out, supported by a moulded bressumer, and is framed in close studding with a middle rail. This section features two 3-light casement windows with small panes and square panelling in the gable.
