Description
BOMERE HEATH C.P. A528 (east side) SJ 42 SE 3/57 Barn approx. 80 metres - to north-west of Lea Hall
GV II
Barn. Late C16, with some late C18 or early C19 alterations. Weather- boarded timber frame and chamfered dressed red/grey sandstone plinth (board- ing between the timbers of the top panels - c.f. barn at Preston Gubbals), with gable ends rebuilt in red brick. Slate roof. Framing: square panels, 4 from sole plate to wall plate. 5 framed bays, with half bays at each end. Gable ends with returned raised brick verges and arched owl holes in apices. Each side with central large cart entrance (pair of large boarded doors surviving to north-east only) and flanking boarded loft doors. Inserted door to north-east. Interior: collar and tie- beam trusses with angle braces and raking struts. Cross frames flanking centre bay with sole plates in low red sandstone walls and long straight tension braces. 3 purlins to each side of roof, with straight wind braces to the middle ones. Some inserted flooring. It is possible that barn was formerly of 7 full bays but when the gable ends were rebuilt the end bays were reduced. The barn forms part of a large group of outbuildings to Lea Hall (q.v.).
