Description

This barn, located approximately 80 metres to the north-west of Lea Hall, dates from the late 16th century, with some alterations from the late 18th or early 19th century. It features a weather-boarded timber frame and a chamfered dressed red and grey sandstone plinth, with the gable ends rebuilt in red brick. The roof is slate-covered. The barn has square panels, with four extending from the sole plate to the wall plate, and consists of five framed bays, including half bays at each end. The gable ends have returned raised brick verges and arched owl holes at the apex. Each side has a central large cart entrance, with a pair of large boarded doors surviving only on the north-east side, and flanking boarded loft doors. There is also an inserted door on the north-east side.

Inside, the barn features collar and tie-beam trusses with angle braces and raking struts. Cross frames flank the centre bay, with sole plates set in low red sandstone walls and long straight tension braces. There are three purlins on each side of the roof, with straight wind braces on the middle ones, and some inserted flooring. It is possible that the barn originally had seven full bays, but the end bays were reduced when the gable ends were rebuilt. The barn is part of a larger group of outbuildings associated with Lea Hall.
