Description

Merrington Old Hall is a house dating from the late 16th century, with some remodeling around 1700 and a late 19th-century addition at the rear. The structure is timber framed with painted brick nogging, including some herringbone patterns, and is partly underbuilt, with the front rebuilt or refaced in painted brick. It has a plain tile roof. The framing features closely spaced uprights with middle rails and square panels in the gable ends, which have angle braces in the left-hand gable end and parallel diagonal struts in the right-hand gable end, creating lozenge patterns. The house has two framed bays on either side of a central stack bay and stands two storeys tall. The front has a toothed brick eaves cornice and barge boards with finials, along with a large central brick ridge stack.

The southwest (garden) front consists of four bays with wooden cross windows, where the ground floor windows are taller and have segmental relieving arches. The right-hand gable end features a two-light wooden casement on the first floor and an underbuilt ground floor, which may have been jettied, with a canted bay. The left-hand gable end displays a collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts and V-struts. The late 19th-century two-storey rear wing has an external brick end stack, and the entrance is located at the rear.

Inside, the hall features deep-chamfered ceiling beams and cross beams in the right-hand ground-floor room that have broach stops. This room also contains raised and fielded oak panelling from around 1700, complete with a moulded cornice, and an old three-panelled door.
