Description

Leaton Hall Farmhouse is a timber-framed farmhouse with brick nogging, dating from around 1683, and incorporating a probable mid-17th century cross wing. It was refenestrated and partly remodelled around 1837. The farmhouse is largely constructed of red brick, with some red sandstone ashlar dressings, and has a plain tile roof. It is arranged in a ‘T’ shape, with a late 17th century block and a projecting gabled earlier cross wing to the right.

The left-hand block has a first-floor brick cill band, parapeted gable ends with stone copings, and external brick end stacks. The stack to the left has a toothed-brick cornice with three diagonally-placed square shafts and oversailing caps; the stack to the right was rebuilt in the late 20th century with two diagonally-placed square shafts. This block features early 19th century wooden cross windows on the first floor, and an early 19th century tripartite glazing bar sash window to the ground floor, all with stone lintels and returned hoodmoulds. A 2-light basement window is visible on the left-hand side. An early 19th century four-panelled door is located on the right-hand side, featuring lower beaded flush panels and a glazed upper panel, with a returned wooden hoodmould. A central doorway is blocked. The left-hand gable end has blocked 17th century segmental-headed one-light first-floor windows flanking the stack, and a 2-light attic casement to the right of the stack, with a matching casement in the right-hand gable end. A square grey sandstone date stone is set into the left-hand stack, reading "M (or "IL" or "LL")/E E/ 1683". The rear of the left-hand block has 2-windows with 17th century wooden cross windows with recessed segmental heads, and a one-storey lean-to addition.

The right-hand block has a parapeted gable end to the front with stone coping and a finial at the apex, as well as a central brick ridge stack. It features early 19th century two-light wooden casements to each floor, each with a sandstone lintel and returned hoodmould. The right-hand return front was rebuilt in the 18th or 19th century with a dentil brick eaves cornice, and the rear gable end was rebuilt in the late 17th century as indicated by straight joints.

The interior was only partly inspected. A 17th century oak L-plan staircase rises to the attic, featuring landings, a closed string, thick splat balusters, a moulded grip handrail, and a square foot newel post with a large finial. One bedroom is said to be panelled and have a bolection-moulded fireplace.
