Description

The Old Rectory is a rectory that has been converted into a house, dating from the mid-18th century, with possible alterations in the late 18th century. It is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof with a two-span design to the right. The building has an L-shaped plan with later infill in the angle and stands two storeys high with an attic. The left side has a stepped plinth, a dentil brick eaves cornice, and parapeted gables topped with stone copings. There are integral brick end stacks and two brick stacks located behind the ridge, off-centre to the left. The façade consists of 2:1:1 bays, with glazing bar sash windows that have slightly segmental heads and painted stone cills; the first-floor windows on the left are boxed. A gabled break is present in the second bay from the right, featuring a small two-light attic casement and a first-floor Venetian window with a boxed sash, painted stone cill, and gauged-brick head. The entrance includes a half-glazed door with flush lower panels, framed by a Greek Doric stone doorcase with full columns supporting an entablature adorned with mutules. The interior has only been partially inspected, revealing a late 18th-century oak staircase with one swept flight, an open string, stick balusters (one per tread), and a swept handrail that is wreathed to a tall columnular foot newel, with the balustrade returning to two sides of the landing. The right-hand ground-floor front room features a fluted plaster frieze, and there is a large open fireplace in the rear kitchen, complete with a chamfered wooden lintel.
