Description

Merchant House, located at No 4 Rainbow Street in Leominster, is an agricultural merchant's store that was built in 1888, with a 18th-century rear section. The building is constructed of brick and features a Welsh slate roof with a central gable. It stands two storeys high with a cellar and has a three-window range, consisting of 6/6 casements under ashlar lintels in the center and gauged brick flat arches. The façade is flanked by half-glazed double doors leading to lofts on the left, which includes a pulley-crane.

The building is adorned with three moulded brick pediments, the central one featuring a tympanum, panels, and the date. The main entrance has 20th-century double doors set within a chamfered ashlar doorcase that includes a keyblock and a modillioned hood. On either side of the entrance are large three-light windows with clerestory lights, all under moulded hoods supported by cast-iron pillars. To the right of the entrance, there are half-glazed double doors with a barred overlight beneath a gauged brick flat arch featuring an ashlar keyblock. To the left, there are half-glazed panelled double doors topped with a 20th-century panel.

The building also features mosaic tile panels within ashlar architraves that read "G R Hinton's General Stores," "Corn Potatoes," and "Hay Straw." The 18th-century range at the rear is made of brick over rubble, has cast-iron lights, and is topped with a hipped Welsh slate roof. The interior has not been inspected.
