Description
The Gables is a house dating from the 15th century, with some rebuilding in the 17th century and alterations from the early 19th century and mid-20th century. It features a timber-frame structure with rendered infill, set on a coursed rubble base, and is topped with a tile roof. The building has an H-plan layout, with the main range aligned north to south, rebuilt in the 17th century, and cross-wings from the 15th century. The main stack is located at the north end of the hall.
The west front displays gabled cross-wings that were formerly jettied, and it is two storeys high with a window arrangement of one plus two plus one, all featuring boxed glazing bar sashes. The central entrance is adorned with a flat canopy that has a moulded stone cornice, supported by square Doric piers, leading to a six-panelled door. The framing includes two square panels high to the first floor. The right-hand cross-wing features two outer panels, each with a pair of curved angle braces that form cusped trefoil heads, while the left-hand cross-wing has braces that form two-centred heads. The hall's centre has a semi-circular timber head. The north wall consists of four square panels high with curved angle braces and a curved bracket supporting the jetty. Both gables are supported by three struts to the collar.
