Description

38 and 48 Broomy Hill are two houses built in the late 19th century. They are constructed of brick with ashlar sandstone detailing and have a hipped roof covered with turnerized slate. The houses feature three brick stacks at the front and additional stacks at the rear.

The exterior is two storeys high with a cellar and has a six-window range. The windows include pairs of 2/2 sashes flanked by additional paired 2/2 sashes, all set under stone arched lintels with keyblocks. There are also 2/2 French windows with moulded stone lintels, canted bays with a mix of 1/1, 2/2, and 1/1 casements, and altered balustrades above. A cast-iron balcony, supported by scrolled brackets, connects the canted bays. The left returned sides feature three 2/2 sashes and bracketed eaves. The central entrances consist of part-glazed panelled doors with sidelights, all beneath stone entablatures supported by Tuscan columns, flanked by 2/2 casements and rusticated quoins. The rear includes two buttress stacks and various 2/2 and 3/3 sashes.

Inside No. 48, there is a dogleg staircase with cast-iron tendril balusters leading to the first floor, along with a winder stair to the attic and another winder stair to the rear. The attic has a margin-glazed stairwell light and two 4-panel doors. The first floor at the rear features 4-panel doors, a late 19th-century fireplace, and a picture rail. The front of the first floor includes 19th-century fireplaces, a ceiling cornice, a picture rail, and 4-panel doors with architraves. The ground floor has four fielded-panel doors with architraves, ceiling cornices and roses, a picture rail, a 19th-century fireplace with a marble fire surround and inserted tiled grate, and skirtings. The cellar contains a 4-panel door, is lined with stone and brick, has a brick floor, a plank door, a wine cellar, and an arched stack base.
