Description
Ye Olde Salutation Inn is a public house that originally comprised two houses, dating from the 17th century and later remodeled in the early 18th century and early 19th century, with some mid-20th century alterations. The building features a timber frame with rendered infill and painted brick, topped with a slate and tile roof. It has an L-shaped plan, with the 18th century section to the north and the 19th century section to the west, while the original 17th century house is located beyond.
The north front has a left gabled wing with a band at the ground floor. The building is two storeys high, with the upper window being a glazing bar sash set under a rubbed brick head with a keystone. The ground floor features a 24-pane sash window under a similar head. The gable above showcases carved bargeboards that date from the 15th or 16th century. The 19th century section on the right has a three-light casement window under a segmental head on both floors.
The entrance is located at the left-hand corner and consists of a six-panel door beneath a blind semi-circular head. The 17th century part to the right also has two storeys, featuring two 2-light casements above two 3-light casements. The entrance between these sections has a plain wooden architrave and a ledged and boarded door. The framing includes four square panels high with straight angle braces, and the gable-end truss has two struts supporting the collar.
